Jan 17 Vancouver BC. Early Music Vancouver presents the mystical soundscape of the Middle Ages with master storyteller Benjamin Bagby and the narrative poem Gregorius; Friday, January 17, 2025 at 7:30 pm at the Vancouver Playhouse. The ensemble Sequentia is Benjamin Bagby, voice, harp, direction; Jasmina Črnčič, voice and harp; and leiken, voice. A Post-Concert Chat with Sequentia will be hosted by Suzie LeBlanc. Jan 17 All Areas. The Harp Gathering is planning its next conference May 16-18 at Sauder Village OH, and a super early bird registration is available until January 17! Jan 18 On-line. Verlene Schermer Workshop, Saturday, 1/18/25 10:00 am – 12:00 pm PST: “Swedish Songs and Tunes” open to all levels and all instruments and singers. Listen to YouTube performances of the tunes, and discuss some of the interesting rhythms that are particular to Swedish music. Get arrangements that can be played on lever harp, pedal harp, or piano, in addition to lead sheets with melody, lyrics in Swedish with English translations, and chords for singers, guitarists, and other instrumentalists. Jan 18 Portland OR. Meeting Third Saturdays: Harps at Artichoke, 2007 SE Powell Blvd., Portland OR. 12-1:30 pm. Play-along tune book on site, solos most welcome. Jan 25 On-line. Verlene Schermer Workshop, Saturday, 1/25/25 10:00 am – 12:00 pm PST: “World Wide Lullabies” open to all levels and all instruments and singers. Learn lullabies from around the world! These can be lovely additions to your therapeutic music repertoire. Listen to YouTube videos and talk about what makes a song a “lullaby” and how you can improvise while keeping the lullaby elements intact. Get arrangements that can be played on lever harp, pedal harp, or piano, in addition to lead sheets with melody, lyrics (in both the original languages and English translations), and chords for singers, guitarists, and other instrumentalists. Jan 25 Olympia WA. The Olympia-area harp circle will meet January 25 from 1-3 pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3800 Henderson Blvd SE, Olympia. The church is near Olympia High School. Harpers should enter on the north side of the building, then turn left and go to the room in the corner at the end of the hall. For this meeting, Jean Stewart has asked that anyone who has a copy of Sylvia Woods’ “Teach Yourself to Play the Folk Harp” bring it to the circle and we can try playing some songs out of the book.
